Kite aerial photography or KAP as it is known, is a photography technique which uses the lifting power of a kite to provide an aerial camera platform. From the air the camera provides a new and refreshing perspective. KAP seems to give the most compelling images from heights below those normally associated with aircraft.

Without a doubt, the use of kites for lifting the camera brings out the inner child! The stresses and strains of work melt away as the Kite is borne aloft.

The kite is flown first without the camera system and allowed to settle in steady clear air above ground turbulence before the camera system is attached to the kite line.

The line is then let out, carrying the kite and camera aloft. By walking around, holding the kite line, and aiming the camera, the pictures are taken.

KAP can bring out skills you didnt know you had. Like using your foot to hold the kite line while controlling the rig with your teeth.

KAP can make you an instant expert and is an ideal topic of conversation when meeting people but when the curious’ eyes roll back in his head, it could be urgent to change topic …

KAP is a hobby for those who want to do something a bit different. Wait until youve chased a kite reel across a field or attempted underwater photography with your KAP rig …

Practical and commercial use of KAP is limited by the unpredictability of the weather and the fact that not every site is suitable to flying a kite. Launching a kite near buildings or downwind of trees can be a very interesting experience …

The main applications of KAP are art and archaeology and attempts to commercialize KAP have so far been largely unsuccessful but it’s so much fun!!!
